Drama Kids Online Frequently Asked Question
Have questions? Explore our frequently asked questions (FAQs) below for quick access to the most common questions about our online drama classes. If you have questions that are not answered here, please feel free to email us.
Who should take a Drama Kids Online class?
All children! Drama advances their personal skills, helps public speaking, builds self-confidence, and more! Shy students feel more confident taking risks when allowed to act up with their microphone muted. Outgoing students get an outlet to unleash their imaginations. All types of learners benefit from being in their own space, often adding props and costumes to a scene from items they have around the house!
How do I pay?
We take monthly payments for all classes. Payments are processed on the 10th of each month. If you need to drop a class, please do so by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org by the 5th of the month.
Can I sign up even if a class has started and will my child have missed anything?
We welcome you and encourage you to sign up for any class, even if the start date has passed. Our curriculum is specially designed for a child to jump in at any point and have the same great experience as a Drama Kid who has been with us for years! Teachers are trained to meet children at their needs, so they will welcome any new student with open arms and ensure they are always included.
What does a typical lesson look like?
Every class has the same basic structure with different activities for each lesson. We find that this structure allows students to get comfortable since there will be no surprises on how the class will flow:
- Introductory Activity: a warm-up activity that allows students to get their creativity flowing.
- Speech: every child will have an opportunity to perform a speech line using skills taught by the teacher.
- Movement: we focus on using body language and dynamic movement to create stories and characters.
- Main Activity: This is the time for each child to really shine through performance opportunities, using the skills we have learned so far.
- Concluding Activity: a high-intensity activity or theater game to end the class on a high note.
Are there opportunities for socialization?
Absolutely. While it is within the context of the class, students have been able to make new friends all around the United States, Canada, and beyond. Creating scenes and characters together allows students to learn more about themselves and each other.
Are they working toward a play at the end of the year? Or is it a more general goal?
Play performances are definitely on the horizon at Drama Kids Online. At this time, classes are focused on small improvisations during each class, therefore providing a fun and stress-free experience! If you are looking for performance opportunities, we do offer our Take 2 Performance Academy Summer camps where students can be involved in a play, a musical, or both!
My child is almost 5, can I sign them up before they turn 5?
We recommend a starting age of 5 for online classes but will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Your child should be able to pay attention and follow instructions independently for the duration of the 40-minute class. We recommend this age minimum so your child can have a positive first Drama Kids experience. We do not want them to be overwhelmed by the activities or the technical aspects of class. Please email us if you are unsure.
Are the classes too advanced for my beginner?
All of our Drama Kids classes are suitable for beginners as well as the more advanced students. Our teachers are trained to meet each student at their level. Every student will take something different out of each class and be challenged to grow in a way that is comfortable for them. It is one of the things that makes our program unique!
What are Master Classes?
Our MasterSkills modules take students even deeper into the skill set of their choice. Each module consists of six 90-minute sessions. Working with an award-winning director and actor, your performer will hone their skills and further develop their craft. These classes are available to students from 12 to 17 years old.
How long has the company been around?
In 1985, Helen O’ Grady, a popular TV actress in Australia, decided to create a completely new way to develop children and created a children’s drama program using various fun and fast-paced drama activities to build children’s speaking, acting, and social skills. Parents saw the remarkable benefits of class participation and classes built quickly throughout Australia. In 1989, the program was launched into other countries as The Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Academy. Today her theater classes for kids have proved so successful that there are over 50,000 students currently attending classes in over 1,500 locations throughout the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Drama Kids International, Inc. is both proud and excited to be the exclusive U.S. provider of the Helen O’Grady Children’s Drama Program, the most popular after-school acting lessons in the world offering theater classes for toddlers, kids, tweens, and teens.
Who are the teachers?
Our teachers are trained and highly qualified theatre and education professionals. They are theatre directors, actors, school teachers, and more!
Can your teachers connect me with an acting agent?
While our teachers might have contacts for their own personal use, we are a drama education program, not a talent referral program, and therefore do not provide any recommendations.
Have your students gone onto a professional career in theatre, film, or television?
Our program is solely based on the development of life skills such as confidence, public speaking, creative thinking, and more through drama and acting. We are not an acting training program, therefore we do not keep track if any students have eventually gone off to audition for film or television.
Are the classes free?
Drama Kids online is a reasonably priced enrichment program developed by theatre and education professionals. At this time, we do not provide any kind of free classes to students.
Do you have any discounts or financial assistance?
At this time, due to limited class availability, our program does not have any financial assistance or discounts available. We hope to be able to offer need-based scholarships in the future as our program continues to grow.
Would it be possible to have a trial lesson before we commit?
Because our classes fill up so quickly, we do not offer any free trial classes. But our teachers work extremely hard to make each class fit every child’s needs. Try us out for a month! We know your child will love our class, but if they prefer to try another activity after a month of classes, simply let us know you will be dropping the class before the next payment cycle! It’s that easy.
Why should I sign up for more than one month?
The Drama Kids curriculum is extensive and ever-growing! No two classes are the same. Each week our teachers delve further into the skills they have already learned in order to solidify and grow them while also learning new skills. The longer a student takes a Drama Kids Online class, they create more complex characters, storytelling becomes more intricate, body language and facial expressions come more naturally, and they become leaders in the classroom.
Is this a good program for non-native speakers to practice English?
Our classes are geared toward fluent English speakers and would not be a good fit for practicing the language.
