Coming back to drama kids after winter break was described by one of our students as being “better than Christmas.” The reason? All the friends they had made and the wonderful feeling of coming back to a welcoming community. These are the sorts of stories that let us know we’re on the right track. Our teachers work hard to foster an uplifting, educational, and welcoming environment in the classroom. Drama Kids teachers know that we aren’t just putting on shows, we’re helping students foster relationships and friendships that can last a lifetime.
According to a study done by the National Health Institute in 2022, there has been an increase in teenage isolation and loneliness in the last few years. Leading to more internalization and less connection among peers. There are, however, steps that can be taken to help set teenagers up on a path of engagement with the world around them. One way to do so is through drama. Drama classes allow children the space to be silly and to make mistakes and to learn that both of those things are not only OK but essential to further development. The teamwork that it takes to put on a scene, even just in class, teaches students the skills of listening, sharing, and depending on their scene partner. Once students have all seen each other at their silliest it’s amazing to watch how quickly the friendships form.
Drama Kids lays the foundation for students to make lifelong friendships through the collaborative and engaging curriculum! It is so exciting to hear stories about our students opening up and thriving socially after joining our classes. Some people wait until college to find like-minded individuals with similar passions. By making these connections, early students and their parents are laying a fantastic groundwork of community and social support for many years to come.
