DRAMA KIDS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have questions? Explore our frequently asked questions (FAQs) below for quick access to the most common questions about our drama classes. If you have questions that are not answered here, please feel free to contact us.

Enrollment

Do we need to wait until the new session starts to enroll, or can we enroll today?

Drama Kids has open enrollment until we start rehearsals for Spring Showcases after Spring Break in March. At that time, enrollment will close until we open again for the next school year session.

If we enroll after the session starts, do we still pay the full tuition or will tuition be prorated?

Tuition will be adjusted to exclude the previous classes your student did not attend. How proration works:
Step 1: How many weeks of classes will Katy have? In this case, you know there are only nine weeks left in the session.

Step 2: Figure out Katy’s full tuition amount. 9 weeks x $18 (per class rate) = $162

Step 3: remove the installment amount for the months not yet charged. For this example, that would be April and May so 2 installments. $64 (monthly tuition) x 2 =$128

Step 4: Subtract that amount from Katy’s full tuition amount $162-$128 = $34

Step 5: Charge $34 for their March installment to catch them up with installment billing.

Can my student try a class before I enroll?

Yes! Click register on the class you would like your child to try and fill out the registration form. Make sure the question that asks if you would like to try a free trial is answered. You will have to enter your credit card information, but no payment will be processed. You will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours of your request. If you have any trouble, please call our office at 813-489-5899 and one of our representatives will be happy to assist you in setting up a trial class for your student.

My child has never taken a drama class before. Are these classes good for beginners?

Yes! Drama Kids teachers are excellent at meeting each child where they are. They can change their teaching style to adapt to any student by helping them when it is needed and challenging them when they are ready. We recommend your child give the class a chance for one full month to see if they truly enjoy it!

Payment

If I need to update my credit card information, how can I do that?

The easiest and most secure way to update your credit card is through our parent portal.  You can visit our portal by clicking here.  If you have trouble updating your card you can always call our office at 813-489-5899.

Do I have to pay the tuition all at once or do you have payment plans available?

Our yearly tuition is separated into monthly installments for your convenience.  You pay the same amount of tuition each month on the same day regardless of the number of classes in a month. We have done the math so that your child will always receive the full amount of weeks in the school year. The monthly tuition price includes all scheduled days off for holidays or non-school days. To learn more about our monthly installments, please email us at office@fldramakids.com

If I pay off the whole year’s tuition, do I get a discount?

Yes! Please call the office at 813-489-5899 and we can provide a 10% discount if you pay the whole year’s tuition at one time. Please keep in mind there will be no refunds provided if you choose to cancel your child’s registration. The remaining balance will be put onto the account as a class credit to use for future classes or camps.

Class Information

What do you do in each class?

Our classes begin with fun introduction activities that prepare the students’ bodies, minds, and voices for their Drama Kids class. Then, in our speech component, students hone their articulation, projection, and volume control skills. In the creative movement portion, students implement postures, body language, and physical storytelling. In our main lessons, students perform short scenes (either scripted or improvised) to combine their speech and movement skills with their own creativity. Each class concludes with a high-energy concluding activity.

Do students put on a play at the end of the school year?

Starting after Spring Break, students start rehearsals for a Spring Showcase Presentation. This is a short, theatrical performance where students are given the chance to demonstrate the skills they’ve learned in class. Each student gets a character with lines to memorize and uses teamwork to rehearse in class and perform for parents at the end of the year. Please check your student’s class calendar for the specific date of their Spring Showcase Presentation.

Can parents observe classes?

For the comfort of other students, Drama Kids does not allow parents to observe classes. However, families are welcomed into the classroom once in the Fall and once in the Spring for our Family Fun Day lessons and at the end of the school year to watch the Spring Showcases.

Will my student have the same teacher all year?

Yes. Barring extremely unusual circumstances, Drama Kids teachers instruct their classes for the duration of the school year.

Musical Theatre Classes

My kid really loves to perform. Do you offer musical theater classes?

Absolutely! These classes are offered within our Drama Kids Take 2 Performance Academy held at our South Brandon, Wesley Chapel, Lutz, and Apollo Beach community locations. Keep in mind that all programs (minus the South Brandon High School Take 2) require a student also to be enrolled in any Creative Drama or Acting Academy class.

What is the Drama Kids Take 2 Performance Academy?

Take 2 Performance Academy is a program that focuses on building children’s confidence through the magic of musical theatre! For more information, click here or select “Take 2 Performance Class” under the “Drama Classes” menu.

Where is Take 2 Performance Academy located?

Brandon location – Rehearsals are held at the Creative Junk Therapy space in the La Viva Plaza on Lumsden. During tech week, rehearsals move to HCC Brandon, where the performances are also held.

Wesley Chapel location – Rehearsals and performances are held at the New Tampa Performing Arts Center.

Apollo Beach location – Rehearsals are held at the Clubhouse in the Waterset community, and performances are held at the Firehouse Cultural Center

Are there any prerequisites required to join the Drama Kids Take 2 Performance Academy?

Any child, no matter the experience level, can participate in our Take 2 program. Previous singing, dancing, or acting experience is not required! Our program is designed to build the confidence of children who might not be as comfortable on the stage while also challenging students who have a little more experience. For all Take 2 programs in all locations (except the South Brandon High School Take 2)students must also be enrolled in any Creative Drama or Acting Academy class to be eligible to enroll.

Why does my child also need to be enrolled in a Creative Drama or Acting Academy class to enroll in Take 2?

Add the question: Why does my child also need to be enrolled in a Creative Drama or Acting Academy class to enroll in Take 2? Our Creative Drama and Acting Academy classes are the core of Drama Kids. These 1 hour a week classes teach students the foundations of acting, public speaking, and stage presence that they will then use in rehearsals. Because rehearsals are only 2 hours per week, the production team focuses on learning the material so the students can confidently stand on stage and be proud of what they produce. There is not enough time in those two hours to teach the basics or projection, articulation, shining your light to the audience, character building, etc. We have found, since our beginnings, that these skills classes are CRUCIAL to the success of the students in our musicals. Students can be enrolled in any Creative Drama or Acting Academy, no matter the location, and still be involved in the Take 2 performance Academy.

How much does this musical theater program cost?

South Brandon location:
Elementary – $110 per month for 4 months (January-April)
Middle/High School – $178 per month for 4 months (January-April)

Apollo Beach Location:
$110 per month for 5 months (November-March)

New Tampa PAC Location:
$110 per month for 5 months (October-February)

Lutz Location:
$110 per month for 5 months (November-March)

Are there any additional costs to be in the musical?

We ask that students source their own costumes and personal props which might come at small expense but we encourage you to get creative and borrow/use what you have

My child has never taken theater before. Is this musical program good for beginners?

Yes! Take 2 Performance Academy is the perfect introduction to musical theater. Because every student must take a weekly skills class in addition to this program, students learn and practice all of their basic acting and public speaking skills before entering rehearsal. Then, they bring those skills they have learned into rehearsal where instructors encourage student creativity when building a character and foster confidence through singing, dancing, and acting. Instructors never expect perfection and there is no right or wrong, only fun!

With so many themes, workshop camps are perfect for children of all ages and experience levels

What are Performance Camps?

Performance camps are part of our Take 2 Performance Academy and offer the chance for children to perform in a musical. With acting, dancing, and singing, these camps can challenge children who have experience in theater while also presenting musical theater in a fun and easy to digest way for beginners.

Where are the summer camps located?

Summer camps are held at locations all around the Tampa Bay Area. The bulk of our camps are held at our main location in Brandon: St Andrews UMC. Check out our Summer Camp page for more information.
